Inquiry Success for Student Accommodation and Hotel Scheme
We are pleased to have acted for Alumno Group in successfully securing planning permission on appeal for its proposed development in Colchester following a three week public inquiry.
The scheme will provide 336 student bedspaces and an 87 room hotel, along with commercial units and artists’ studios.
The main issues disputed at the appeal related to design and heritage considerations, with Colchester’s Roman Town Wall forming part of the scheme’s southern boundary. Various listed buildings are in proximity to the site, which is also located within a Conservation Area.
Alec Cropper, who worked alongside leading counsel in appearing at the inquiry, commented that “we are very pleased with the outcome of this appeal, which will deliver significant regeneration benefits for Colchester”. Natalie Greig, Senior Development Manager at Alumno, said that “Alec provided unwavering support throughout the appeal and worked seamlessly with our team”.
